Fear, Time and Literature [2017]

Abstract : The relationship between art and fear has its own history, which is directly related to the history of comparative literature in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially insofar as it is linked to the emigration of philologists from Germany and Central Europe to Western Europe, then to the United States from the mid-1930s onwards. This history has undergone new developments since the beginning of the millennium, when reflections on the role played by literary forms in the collective understanding of the threats facing societies joined broader debates on the ability of aesthetic representations to account for the world after 9/11, and in an era of proven ecological risk. Considering the problematic association of fear and security allows us to approach from another angle the specific role that literature could (once again) play within all cultural productions in managing an era of fear that is now globalized. Indeed, literature does consider these as two alternative states inseparable from our relationship to reality; between these two poles, forms and genres are ordered according to their greater or lesser involvement in a description of reality, and the particular engagement in the world that their writing program calls for. However, each literary formulation of a threat always involves a warning about what becomes of reality, in its unpredictable novelty, as well as the expression of new human attitudes towards this reality. Above all, it proposes elements for an ethical and aesthetic qualification of the state of apprehension that it engages, invents or describes.
