Pierre de Serval, a pastor of ``the empire of Beautiful letters''

Résumé

Pierre de Serval (1631-1695) is one of those French pastors who turned to literature under the regime of the Edict of Nantes. His double collection of verses, entitled Les Sonnets et les petits vers du sieur de Serval ouvrage precieux. Extrait des illustres, composed as a book to be printed, is an exceptional testimony to the aspirations and even fantasies of the French pastors who, under the reign of Louis XIV, tried to find a place for themselves in the Republic of Letters. Although Serval's voice is singular, it is nonetheless representative of the claims of a literate group seeking to uphold its confessional difference within the field of religion while unabashedly adopting worldly practices. This article offers the first substantive analysis of this collection of poetry (which remained in handwritten form only) whose documentary value is exceptional. | Telecharge le 11/01/2022 sur www.cairn.info
