Ferroptosis in Liver Disease

Résumé

Ferroptosis, a form of non-apoptotic regulated cell death characterized by its dependence on cellular iron availability and the occurrence of intense lipid peroxidation, was first described in 2012. Over the past 7 years, a number of biomarkers and candidate regulatory genes of ferroptosis have been identified. In spite of this increasing fundamental knowledge, little is known regarding the induction of ferroptosis in vivo. Here, we review the studies that address the possibility that ferroptosis could contribute to the spectrum of liver diseases, acute or chronic. We also discuss the appealing possibility of inducing ferroptosis as a therapeutic approach against hepatocellular carcinoma, the most frequent form of primary liver cancer.
