Uncharted Modernism: Surrealist Literature and Cinema

This paper looks at two film extracts in Bruce Posner’s « Unseen Cinema » DVD retrospective which both strongly echo transition’s fantastic experiments and contribute to the shaping of an early form of American surrealism : Douglas Fairbank’s When the Clouds Roll By (1919) and James Cruze’s Beggar on Horseback (1925).
