Fantastic surrealism: the influence of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland on transition magazine's American surrealist literary experiments (1927-1938)

Résumé

This chapter explores the influence of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland on the American Surrealist literary experiments published in transition magazine, the American exile magazine published in Paris between 1927 and 1938. First, it shows that these experiments, essential to the emergence of an early current of American surrealism in the late twenties and early thirties, rely in part on a revisit of Wonderland, in contrast to Carroll's much less defining influence on the work of the French surrealists. Then, it considers the reasons why Alice's Adventures in Wonderland plays an important role in the network of interactions, exchanges, and influences that came to shape transition's American surrealist experiments. Looking at the cultural importance of Alice in the American society of the 1920s and 1930s, and more specifically, looking at its role in the American reception of both the French surrealist avantgarde and Joyce's 'Work in Progress,' demonstrates Carroll's powerful influence in creating an American, fantastic form of surrealism.
