This article offers a historical overview of the development of agricultural cooperative credit in the Bulgarian and Serbian lands from the Ottoman era to World War I. Essentially, we present an institutional and comparative analysis of the genesis, transformation and forms of agricultural cooperative credit over the long term, its driving forces and mechanisms. \textcopyright 2018 Journal of European Economic History.
