Producing 'a literature of effraction' to 'explode the social repressed'

This article proposes to take up part of the approach initiated in a Political Science thesis, dealing, on the one hand, with the conditions of production of the autosociobiographical work of the French woman writer Annie Ernaux, in particular with the ambivalent stakes of her indissociably literary and political project - for her, it is a question of producing a "literature of effraction", likely to "explode the social repressed" -, and, on the other hand, with the social diversity of its social and political receptions and uses. Through a singular literary product, in a multidisciplinary problematic that could be qualified as a "political sociology of literature", this study wishes to contribute to the knowledge of the social processes of formation of works and their "value" - both literary and social -, but also of the logics and modalities of fluctuation of this value over time. Finally, the aim is to understand the social determinants of their differentiated reception according to the dispositions of the different types of readers who appropriate them. One of the starting hypotheses is that the literary fact, both in its production aspect and as a reception activity, can enable the activation and updating of representations of the social world, which function as operators in the construction of identities, whether social, gendered or political. Such a research approach supposes to go beyond the false oppositions, however traditional, between internal and external analysis of the literary works, and to try instead to grasp the indissociability of the process of literary communication, by bringing together the three elements that are usually separated in surveys: the author, the text, the reader.
The present contribution aims at reporting on the study carried out upstream, on the social conditions of production of Annie Ernaux's literary project: the trajectory and the social properties of the writer have been linked to the particularities of her work and her position in the literary field. Her socio-biographical itinerary and the genesis of her relationship to writing are thus objectified, as well as the determinants and issues, inseparably social, political and literary, of the forms of "white", "flat" writing that make up the singular mark of the writer's literary expression, and finally the original (if not marginal) position she occupies in the contemporary French literary field.
Cet article se propose de reprendre une partie de la démarche initiée dans le cadre d'une thèse de Science politique, portant, d’une part, sur les conditions de production de l'oeuvre autosociobiographique de l'écrivaine Annie Ernaux, en particulier sur les enjeux ambivalents de son projet indissociablement littéraire et politique - il s'agit pour elle de produire une "littérature d'effraction", susceptible de faire "exploser le refoulé social" -, et, d’autre part, sur la diversité sociale de ses réceptions et de ses usages sociaux et politiques. Au travers un produit littéraire singulier, dans une problématique pluridisciplinaire que l'on pourrait qualifier de "sociologie politique de la littérature", cette étude souhaite apporter une contribution à la connaissance des processus sociaux de formation des oeuvres et de leur “valeur” - tant littéraire que sociale -, mais aussi des logiques et modalités de fluctuation de celle-ci au cours du temps. L’objectif est enfin d’appréhender les déterminants sociaux de leurs réceptions différenciées en fonction des dispositions des différents types de lecteur-rices qui se les approprient. L’une des hypothèses de départ est que le fait littéraire, tant dans son aspect production que comme activité de réception, peut permettre d’activer et d’actualiser des représentations du monde social, lesquelles fonctionnent comme des opérateurs dans la construction des identités, qu’elles soient sociales, genrées ou politiques. Une telle démarche de recherche suppose de dépasser les fausses oppositions, pourtant traditionnelles, entre analyse interne et analyse externe des œuvres, pour au contraire tenter de saisir l'indissociabilité du procès de communication littéraire, en rassemblant les trois éléments que d'ordinaire on sépare dans les enquêtes : l’auteur-e ou le-a producteur-rice, le texte ou le message, le-a lecteur-rice ou le-a récepteur-rice.
La présente contribution s’attache à rendre compte de l’étude menée en amont, sur les conditions sociales de production du projet littéraire d’Annie Ernaux : la trajectoire et les propriétés sociales de l’écrivaine ont été reliées aux particularités de son oeuvre et de sa position dans le champ littéraire. Sont ainsi objectivés son itinéraire sociobiographique et la genèse de son rapport à l'écriture, les déterminants et les enjeux indissociablement sociaux, politiques et littéraires des formes d'écriture "blanche", "plate", qui font la marque singulière de l'expression littéraire de l'écrivaine, enfin la position originale (sinon marginale) qu'elle occupe relationnellement dans le champ littéraire français contemporain.
