Structural analysis of the biopharmaceutical innovation network in Ile-de-France

Companies are constantly developing into networks. This trend is particularly prevalent in innovation and R&D-based sectors. In these science-based sectors, companies have profoundly modified their organizational structures by building and/or inserting themselves into complex networks.
In this article, we will try to understand and analyze the structuring of the alliance networks within the biopharmaceutical industry of one of the most dynamic regions in this field, the Ile-de-France region. It will also involve mapping the nature of these alliances, through the study of regional collaborative projects, and studying the interactions between the different players within its networks. We will establish a strong correlation between the performance of a network, on the one hand, and the structuring and interaction of its actors, on the other. To do this, we carried out an empirical study which allowed us to identify the role of major players through collaborative regional R&D projects in Ile-de-France. This approach makes it possible to identify the positions of the players within the network and to analyze the interactions at stake between these different players. We observe this evolution over a period of eleven years, from 2005 to 2016.
The results of this empirical study made it possible to establish the architecture of the Ile-de-France network over a period of 11 years while analyzing the correlation between the centrality of the main players (big pharma and public organizations) and their capacity for innovation within the network itself.
Les entreprises ne cessent de se développer en réseaux. Cette tendance est plus particulièrement répandue au sein des secteurs basés sur l’innovation et la R&D. Dans ces secteurs, science-based, les entreprises ont profondément modifié leurs structures organisationnelles en construisant et/ou en s’insérant dans des réseaux complexes.
Dans cet article, nous tenterons de comprendre et d’analyser la structuration des réseaux d’alliances au sein de l’industrie biopharmaceutique d’une des régions les plus dynamiques dans ce domaine, la région Ile-de-France. Il s’agira également de dresser une cartographie de la nature de ces alliances, via l’étude des projets collaboratifs régionaux, et d’étudier les interactions entre les différents acteurs au sein de ses réseaux. Nous établirons une forte corrélation entre la performance d’un réseau, d’un côté, et la structuration et l’interaction de ses acteurs, de l’autre.
Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé une étude empirique qui nous a permis d’identifier le rôle des acteurs majeurs à travers des projets de R&D collaboratifs régionaux franciliens. Cette approche permet d’identifier les positions des acteurs au sein du réseau et d’analyser les interactions en jeu entre ces différents acteurs. Nous observons cette évolution sur une période de onze ans, de 2005 à 2016.
Les résultats de cette étude empirique ont permis d’établir l’architecture du réseau francilien sur une durée de 11 ans tout en analysant la corrélation entre la centralité des principaux acteurs (big pharma et organismes publics) et leur capacité d’innovation au sein même du réseau.
