Experimental study of magnetic pulse generator and the field shaper effect on the current pulse

Résumé

The present study examines the performance of a magnetic pulse generator and the procedure of assembling metal pieces of dissimilar materials. The welding is done by superposing two concentric tubes without contact with the tool coil and by producing current pulses of 100 kA. A magnetic pressure, also known as the Maxwell pressure, acts radially on the surface of the outer tube allowing joining the two tubes. In this study, we provide the electrical scheme of the generator. Then, for welding application, a massive coil of one single turn is applied. In order to minimize the weakness of the welding operation, we proved the utility of a single-turn coil instead of a multi-turn one. Experimental tests were carried out to measure and analyze the current pulse produced by the coil. First, without joining operation (absence of tubes inside the coil), then with the tubes welding. Through these two cases, the variation of the current pulse and the resonance frequency in terms of the tubes thickness is analyzed and reported.
